St. Benedict’s splits games

By Todd Abeln

The St. Benedict Saints split their two league games this
weekend, rallying from a four run ninth inning deficit in the slop on Saturday
to beat Prior Lake,
and getting trounced in Veseli on Sunday 15-1.

Versus Prior Lake,
the offense sputtered in the steady mist managing only six hits.  Starting
pitcher Joe Lucas kept his team in the game and left after seven strong innings
trailing 2-1.  The Mudcats added to their lead in the ninth inning getting
three runs off Saints relievers Shane Hawkins and Adam McMahon.

Good fortune late has been commonplace at home in years past
against Prior Lake
and this day would prove to be no different.  Down 5-1 in the ninth, Scott
Eischens singled with one away, Jacob Lucas walked, and Eischens scored on a
ground-rule double off the bat of McMahon.  Stephen Krueger struck out,
but reached first as the ball rolled away from the Mudcats catcher.
Pinch-hitter Chris Pint walked with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to
5-3.  A sacrifice fly and walk ensued, and both Krueger and pinch runner
Jeff Peters scored on Aaron Langsweirdt's ground ball that was mishandled to
give the Saints an improbable 6-5 comeback victory.

     Just three Saints' batters collected
hits.  Two each for Eischens, McMahon, and Steve Weiers.  McMahon
sniped the win in relief.

     What followed on Sunday wasn't
good.  St. Benedict was badly outplayed in all facets of the game and lost
to Veseli 15-1 in seven innings.  The offense mustered only four
hits.  Jacob Wolf took the loss on the hill going three-plus innings
yielding six runs on four hits.  The team's lone run scored in the sixth
as Jacob Lucas doubled home Scott Eischens.

St. Benedict sits at 1-2 with a big
week ahead.  The team plays at home this weekend hosting Lonsdale on
Saturday and Montgomery on
Sunday.  Both games are at 2:00
in St. Benedict.  The Saints travel for back-to-back midweek road games in
Elko Wednesday night and Winthrop on Thursday.  7:30 first pitch for both those contests.
