If the Jordan City Council wanted more streetlights along Highway 282, they would cost an average increase of $2,500 apiece.
Months ago, the council authorized Xcel Energy to install a dozen 150-watt streetlights along Highway 282 at a cost of $90,055, or about $7,500 per light. Late last month, the council talked about adding four more streetlights -- two near the intersection of Highway 282 and East Street, two west of Mertens Street and near the highway bridge over Sand Creek.
Xcel Energy gave the city a quote of $40,645 for the four streetlights, roughly $10,000 apiece, City Engineer Carol Caron said.
The increased cost per streetlight is due to the amount of wiring that would be run to the four streetlights, which were not originally included in the $2.8 million highway reconstruction project set to take place this summer.
After a brief discussion on Monday night, the council decided to add two streetlights near the Sand Creek bridge, forgoing the proposed streetlights near the intersection of the highway and East Street.
The money for the streetlights would come partially from assessments and partially from bonding, Finance Director Tom Nikunen said.
