City considers roundabout

At the increasingly dangerous intersection of Creek Lane and Highway 282, one option the Jordan City Council has considered is a roundabout.

The council authorized spending up to $7,500 to complete turning movement counts, analyze data, and prepare a presentation to be given during an eventual public meeting.

City Engineer Carol Caron said studies would show whether a stoplight, additional stop signs, or -- the new trend -- a roundabout would work at the intersection, which draws frequent resident complaints and has been the site of some accidents in recent years. Growth won't make the intersection any better, Caron said.

The first step is conducting turning movement and approach traffic counts, Caron said. In order to get accurate counts, the studies should be done during the school year -- Caron suggested by the end of May.

"These counts will then be analyzed relative to existing delay and intersection capacity," Caron said in a memorandum to the council. "In addition, crash records at the intersection will be reviewed and documented."

Traffic volumes for the intersection of Highway 282 and Creek Lane were collected in 2006, but the intersection did not meet the state-set warrants for a stoplight.

With lots in the Whispering Meadows neighborhood filling up and new housing units being built (despite a recent slowdown), Caron said it is appropriate for the city council to consider further controlling the intersection, which is already controlled by two stop signs -- one on each of Creek and Triangle lanes.

The council unanimously voted in favor of the studies, a staff report in regard to from which part of the city budget the money would come, and a public information meeting.

A date for a public meeting will be announced later.

Caron proposed that it be scheduled for June to gather information on the issues with the intersection and present the findings of the study in regard to delay and safety. Design and control issues would not be evaluated or proposed at the public meeting, but the public could provide input in regard to the options at the intersection.
