The Jordan School Board will meet April 28 to discuss a first round of cuts to the school district budget.

The meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is to officially accept the cuts recommended by the district’s budget-cut committee. The board met earlier this month to make some changes to the recommended cuts, but the consensus was to accept many of the cuts as presented.

At its last meeting, Superintendent Larry Kauzlarich told the board that the district’s financial situation is slightly better than anticipated because of a small graduating class and a large number of kindergartners registered for next year.

The improved financial forecast, though, still shows the district’s general fund depleting by as much as $100,000 next year.

Kauzlarich recommended the board cut about $200,000 from the budget this year.

The cuts recommended by the district’s cost-savings committee, as amended by the board, total about $132,000. That number could rise, though, if the district’s teachers vote to return $50,000 of staff development money to the general fund. Some of the proposed cuts, too, could produce more than the expected amount of savings.
