A study of the recent proposal for a Wal-Mart in the area showed that if the store located in New Prague, the city would draw business from a population of 48,897 in New Prague, Jordan, and several other surrounding towns, according to the New Prague Times.
Wal-Mart would increase jobs, sales, and tax revenue in New Prague, but also might lead to decreased patronage of competing businesses.
The city of New Prague commissioned the study, which was done by McComb Group Inc., and the results were presented to 60 people who attended a meeting at New Prague's city hall. Some of the other findings that might affect Jordan, include:
- More than 200 jobs would be created. Sixty percent of Wal-Mart employees are full time.
- New Prague's trade area would increase to include Jordan, Belle Plaine, Le Center, and part of Elko New Market.
- Trade in New Prague would annually increase by $119.4 million. Wal-Mart would get $58.5 mllion of that, while other retailers could benefit from an additional $60.9 million.
- Liquor, hardware, retail, discount, and drug stores in New Prague would be affected by the incoming business. The report said that some businesses might close as a result of a new Wal-Mart.
- An oversupply of retail space would not be created in New Prague.
