When the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (or some convolutedly named team like that) comes to the Metrodome next week to face my favorite professional sports team, the Minnesota Twins, the hometown team will honor one of its enemies.
Torii Hunter will receive his Gold Glove award prior to the opening-day baseball game against his former team.
Thinking of this year's presentation, I'm reminded of the presentation a couple years ago, during which Hunter went onto the field to receive his award -- which is a glove and two baseballs painted gold and mounted on a plaque -- and as he walked back to the dugout, one of the baseballs fell off and rolled away.
Funny stuff.
Not that I would want Hunter to look bad, but this is the kind of stuff that a photographer likes to catch on camera during an otherwise boring event that he is required to shoot. I usually feel bad for the Star Tribune photogs who have so much talent but also are stuck shooting these kinds of things. When they happen to catch on film a silly thing like the award falling apart, it makes attending all the boring ceremonies worthwhile.
Next week, the Twins' Carlos Gomez, a product of the Johan Santana trade, is slated to start in center field, Hunter's old stomping grounds instead of the wall-climber. Well, Hunter will start there, too, but it just won't be the same.
