Twins non-tender Tyner

Goodbye, Jason Tyner. The Minnesota Twins reserve outfielder was not tendered a contract for 2008, making him a free agent.

Tyner batted .286 last year in 114 games, and he was capable of playing each of the three outfield positions. But the Twins' outfield is clogged. Craig Monroe, Jason Kubel, Michael Cuddyer, Delmon Young, and possibly Jason Pridie are ahead of Tyner.

Kubel was offered a contract and is eligible for arbitration.

Cuddyer is signed for a while, as are Young and Pridie, both of whom came in the trade that also involved Brendan Harris, Jason Bartlett, and Matt Garza.

One of the first offseason moves for the Twins was letting loose reserve outfielder Lew Ford. Tyner stuck around until now, presumably because the Twins were negotiating with the arbitration-eligible Monroe.

Monroe signed today.

I'm sorry to see Tyner go, because he was a good fit here. Last year, when he was hitting late in a game, I felt confident he'd find a way to get on base for an all-too-common ninth-inning surge. He played aggressive defense, covering more ground than any 2007 Twins outfielder except Torii Hunter.

Hopefully, Tyner can latch on with another team and continue a successful albeit unspectacular career. He's a good player.
