Do you want to be fat?

I don’t think wanting to...

I don’t think wanting to be or not wanting to be fat has anything to do with it. I would love to eat right and eat healthy all the time, but here are the two limiting factors in my experience: time and money.

I don’t have the time to sit down each night and make a healthy meal. I don’t have the time to make sure I’m packing healthy snacks to work each day. I don’t have the time to go out and exercise most nights. And then there’s the question of time in the other direction. Living alone, I don’t eat fresh vegetables fast enough to keep them from spoiling.

And then there’s money – eating healthy is not something that comes cheap, most times. To buy and maintain a stock of healthy foods cost more than it does to buy and maintain a stock of unhealthy or food that’s somewhere in the middle.

Yeah, I’ll be the first to admit that I often spend too much money on unhealthy foods (just as much or more than I would on healthy food) and that I spend much of my free time at home on the couch in front of the TV. But I feel like most of those are justifiable, and that the combination of no time and no money is just too much to overcome most days.

Some of that is true, but I...

Some of that is true, but I have to contend with your main two points:

- Healthy food does not necessarily cost more money than fast food. A head of lettuce costs a buck, the same price as a McChicken. Make your own croutons and add a tomato and maybe a green pepper and you have light lunches for a week at about the price of a Whopper meal, which would be eaten in a half-hour. A $3 or $4 a week, a single person or a couple can afford to throw away some spoiled food -- I hate doing that too, but it's not avoidable when you aren't feeding a family of five.

- We are the masters of our own time. We don't have time -- we make it. For example, I can say that I didn't have time to work out last night because I was watching the World Series, but I could've watched the game while on the treadmill. Packing lunches at night saves time in the morning.

I don't know if people truly want to be fat, but we certainly live the consequences of our choices. Maybe I don't care if I gain 20 pounds a year or if that extra weight eventually affects the physical condition of my back and knees.

There are times when I want to eat whatever I want to eat. I'm not a vegetarian or a proponent of never eating out. But I am going to make choices that will help me avoid becoming overweight. I am going to exercise as long as I'm physically able. As a former swimmer, I never had to worry about eating junk food. I ate whatever I wanted. More recently, I have decided to change my bad eating habits and make new, healthier choices before I get too old to be active. That may seem like a long way off, but as I approach the age of 30, my body is tiring and aching.

It's the habits that I make now that will affect the quality of my life later. Eating healthy food is one of those choices.

That said, lunch consists of a lettuce, onion, and crouton salad, topped with limited ranch dressing, along with a 32-ounce bottle of tap water and two Pepsis.

A head of lettuce may cost the same as a McChicken, but a head of lettuce is not a full meal. By the time you’re adding in the veggies and croutons (even if you make your own), it’s more expensive to eat fresh. I’d concede that point if you grew your own veggies – something I’d love to do if I had the money to buy a house with a yard.

Which brings me back to the fact that it’s a combination of the two factors that keep me from living healthy. Sure, it would be great to watch the World Series (or even a real sporting event like Monday night’s Packers-Broncos game) while working out on a treadmill, but that would necessitate me owning a treadmill – something that costs a nice chunk of change. I would gladly make the time to swim (my favorite exercise) often if I had either a pool or gym membership. But those are costly, as is the gas money required to drive to the nearest health clubs offering a pool.
