Sure, “Bourne Ultimatum” was the hot ticket at the box office this weekend, and I do really want to see that flick. But the movie I was most excited to see this weekend was “Hot Rod.” How could you not want to see a movie whose tagline (according to the Internet Movie Database) is “Smack destiny in the face?”
The movie, for those of you not in the know, is about a moped stuntman named Rod who plans to jump 15 school busses in an attempt to raise the required $50,000 for his stepfather’s heart surgery. The only reason he wants to save his stepfather, though, is because he hates the man and wants to beat him in a fight to earn respect and manhood.
The movie was hilarious! There were parts of the movie that were great parodies of those cheesy 80’s self-empowerment flicks – like “Karate Kid,” “Hoosiers,” “Bad News Bears,” “Rocky,” or any other movie that has its main character preparing for a battle of some sort to the sound of synthesizers and hard rock. Other parts of the movie were just so random and ridiculous that you couldn’t help but laugh.
In the end, Rod raises the money for the jump through the help of an AM radio station. He wins the girl away from the jerk boyfriend, he gets a brand new dirt bike, he grows his own moustache, and he takes a ninja star to the shoulder.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed “Napoleon Dynamite” or “Dodgeball.”
