Transformers: more than meets the eye

I saw Transformers on opening night, and it was pretty good.

I didn’t really expect much going in. I don’t really care much for the director (Michael Bay, whose other hits include “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor” and “The Rock”), and movies based on toys just aren’t what I normally like to watch. But this was a nostalgic toy, and I was still a little excited.

And the movie didn’t disappoint. It was a blockbuster in all senses of the word – not overly smart with relatively predictable comic relief. But the action was pretty great and I like a lot of the actors involved.

One thing that disappointed me, though, was the lack of Optimus v. Megatron action. The leaders of the good robots (Otimus Prime of the Autobots) and the bad robots (Megatron of the Decepticons) barely met. In fact, Megatron wasn’t really introduced until the last half hour of a 2-1/2 hour movie.

Plus, the ending seemed a little sudden. At one point the robots were all going to leave, but then they all decide to stay. It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, even for a movie about giant space robots.
