After the Jordan City Council denied Radermacher's Fresh Market a variance from the city's sign ordinance, the planning commission proposed an interim sign permit that would allow businesses in the highway commercial district to have bigger signs than the ordinance allows.
The council approved the measure, which will allow the planning commission time to review the city's policy for calculating the area of a sign. Some cities count the area of each letter, while others draw a box around the words to calculate the area.
Jordan city officials are comparing Jordan's policies to those of neighboring cities.
The interim sign permit is good through Nov. 1, 2008, or until the commission has time to review the ordinance, which is likely to be this fall or winter, according to City Planner Casey MacCallum.
