People are often surprised when I tell them I am a fan of soul and funk music. I can only figure that this surprise come for one of two reasons:

• I am not a soulful person.
• I am not a funky person.

But the fact remains that when a slick Isaac Hayes beat comes on, with the waka-chicka guitar grooving in the background, I can’t help but tap my toes (that’s usually about as far as I go, though, because the thought of me dancing is enough to cause nausea).

That’s why I’ve chosen "Theme from ‘Shaft’" as my personal theme song. It surprises some because it is actually a theme song written for someone completely different. While I am not a private eye who is smooth with the ladies, I do feel an affinity with John Shaft. As the song says, I am "a complicated man, and no one understands (me) but (my) woman."

If I could have a speaker hooked up to me as I walked into a room for the first time, it would be playing "Theme from ‘Shaft.’" If I had an action soundtrack for when I was getting into risky situations, it’d play "Theme from ‘Shaft.’" If I were driving my car down the highway as part of a musical montage, I would be playing "Theme from ‘Shaft.’" It’s my theme song, after all.
