Sometimes, in journalism, art goes by the wayside. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, the art in a newspaper has to send the message of the story.
I shot only a few photos during the Jordan Jaguars loss to Pipestone in the state basketball tournament, but I just happened upon a unique moment. This is a point-and-click shot. No aiming, and only a little cropping.
The photo was shot from the floor of the Target Center, at the end of the Jags' bench. A day later, they placed third in the state tourney, so a sad, frustrating, what-just-happened kind of photo just wasn't able to send a consistent message to go with the story about the Jags' successful first appearance at state.
I wish I would've been able to publish this photo in the print edition of the JI. I'm disappointed that I decided not to -- I felt like it was too good to waste -- but I know I made the right decision.
The story was a happy story, not a sad one.
