That tingling sensation you’re feeling right now? That’s excitement. It’s in the air, it’s in the ground, it’s in me and it’s in you. It’s everywhere.
"But Brandon," you ask, "what is there to be excited about today? It’s cold, and it’s February."
I’ll tell you what you have to be excited for – Moped Day, March 4.
That’s right, a week from today is Moped Day. It’s the holiday I invented to celebrate the moped and the kind of lifestyle a moped facilitates. It’s a day to celebrate freedom. Here’s a quick rundown of the holiday’s history, from the March 2, 2006, Jordan Independent:
"The roots of Moped Day go all the way back to my first year in high school. I had a teacher that was commonly ridiculed for his slow speech and yellowing class notes used since the Nixon Administration. I was scheduled to give a speech to the class on March 4. He told me this was his favorite day of the year, because it reminded people to "march forth into the new year."
"On my 16th birthday, my parents bought a moped, which is like a smaller motorcycle without the special license requirements. I was still in driver education at the time, so I was only allowed to ride it once around our backyard. It was a life changing experience. I decided then and there that I would get my license if only to ride that amazing machine through town every day. I couldn’t wait!
"Flashing forward to my senior year, I had just spent a full summer with my moped. I was hooked completely. I rode as late as I could into the winter. When I tipped over on a patch of ice in late November, I knew it was time to call it a year. But by the time February rolled around, I couldn’t stand it. I was going through a classic case of withdrawal.
"I needed to feel the freedom of the open road again. I needed a Moped Day. So what if there was 2 inches of snow on the ground?
"It was then that I remembered my teacher’s favorite day. I decided that he had a pretty good point. From that day on, I would march forth into a new year of mopeding, starting each year on March 4."
Last year, I wasn’t able to celebrate moped day by actually riding my moped. It was still at my parents house, and I couldn’t get home that weekend. This year, though, I’ve already got plans to ride through the streets of Platteville, Wis.
Sure, the weather calls for snow and cold weather between now and then, but I don’t care. Like the post office, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays" me from the swift completion of my mopeding duties. I’ll just wear a scarf it it’s too cold.
How will you be spending your moped day? At a Moped Day party? Celebrating with your family and close friends? Or maybe with the bitter sting of a cold wind against your face as you race through the streets of town on your mighty steed of a moped?
