Jordan city officials applied to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for a grant to help build a trail along Old Highway 169.

The trail would be built in the county-owned right-of-way along Old Highway 169, running from Aberdeen Avenue to Hillside Drive, rather than connecting with Highway 21, City Planner Casey MacCallum said Tuesday night.

"That's due to costs," City Engineer Carol Caron said.

Caron also pointed out that the city won't know until July whether or not it receives the grant, which officials are hoping will be forĀ almostĀ $74,000. The proposal is for a 50-50 split with the state.

The trail will cost $147,000.

Sand Cos., which is building Jordan Valley Townhomes near the intersection of Old Highway 169 and Hope Avenue, will construct a portion of the trail.

Caron suggested that a bike lane be created from Hillside Drive to Highway 21.

"That would be a cheap alternative," said the engineer.
