Valentine-shmalentine

I look at the calendar now and then, and the displays in the stores are more than enough of a reminder. I know it really is Valentine’s Day today, but I guess I forgot this morning.

Since I was a kid, I’ve always tried to color coordinate my holidays. I would wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, red or green on Christmas, and red on Valentine’s Day. Heck, I even remembered to wear blue and white on the day of the Super Bowl to cheer for a team I really didn’t follow. But today I just forgot. I didn’t realize it until I visited the St. John the Baptist Catholic School Guatemala Day carnival (where I saw all the students wearing red and pink), but I am woefully underdressed for this holiday.

I’m wearing black.

I didn't dress in black on purpose, but I don’t really mind. It may be that I’ve never been in a relationship on Valentine’s Day, but I think the whole thing is crazy. Why only celebrate love one day out of the year? The Bible is full of verses on how you should love – even your enemies. And the Beatles sang that love is all you need all those years ago. But, for some reason, today was picked out as a special day to celebrate love.

It’s all a bunch of hooey, and I’m not about to celebrate hooey.
