I've thinking a lot about wrapping paper lately, so I started to hum the song "Wrapping Paper" by Cream. Before I knew it, the song was stuck in my head. Now, I find myself absentmindedly singing as I walk down the sidewalk to my car or heading to the water cooler. I’m sure I look like an idiot.
This used to happen to me a lot more often. I used to have about one song each day stuck in my mind, but not any more. I used to have to use other songs to forcibly remove the stuck offender from my mind (a peanut butter M&M jingle was particularly catchy and useful). Now, if I just wait a few minutes, the songs seem to just go away.
As near as I can figure, I’ve got fewer songs up there because I have more things about which to think. My mind is usually too busy to wander from song to song until one gets firmly lodged. As much as I regret finding myself singing in public places, I’d choose that over a busy mind any day.
