Mayer Lutheran is no match for Jordan
May 7, 2008 - 3:50pm — tsabeln
Freshman pitcher Tanner Oakes pitched all seven innings and got his first high school victory, as the Hubmen defeated Mayer Lutheran 10-1. Oakes gave up only five hits and one run in the complete-game win. The win is Jordan’s second in a row and its fourth in the last five games. “Tanner was great on the mound,” head coach Kyle Johnson said. “He really got ahead of the hitters and was able to keep the ball down. He had great command of all his pitches today.” Besides Oakes pitching so well, the Jordan offense showed up early and often. The Hubmen pounded out 13 hits in the victory. Ten different players getting at least one hit. “It was one of our best offense games,” Johnson said. T.J. Oakes and Tyler Dabu both scored on sacrifice flies in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Danny Lewis and Michael Pauly pushed the lead to 4-0 in the third, when Lewis led off with a double and scored on Pauly’s triple. Pauly later scored on T.J. Oakes’ sacrifice fly. The lead opened up to 5-0 in the fourth, when Todd Garnhardt scored. Then, the Hubmen rallied for four more runs in the fifth inning to lead 9-0. Eight different batters drove in runs for Jordan, as they improved to 6-4 on the season and 5-2 in the Minnesota River Conference. “I think we can see the improvement from the first game of the season, where we won 5-0 over Mayer, to this game,” Johnson said. “These guys have worked really hard to make us a team to look out for the last half of the season.” doubleheader The big win over Mayer Lutheran was preceded with a split with Sibley East in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 30. The Hubmen lost the first game 18-3 but rebounded with a tough 8-4 win in the nightcap. “I am proud of the way our team bounced back, and hopefully, we can say that win is a big turning point in our season,” Johnson said. In the first game, Pauly struggled, as he gave up seven runs in four innings. “Michael struggled with his control today and couldn’t get the first pitch across for strikes,” Johnson said. In the second game, James Hyatt gave the Hubmen a great pitching performance, as he pitched 6-1/3 innings to get the victory. He gave up four runs on 13 hits. “James threw his best game of the spring,” Johnson said. “He worked out of some tight situations, and the defense was solid behind him.” The Hubmen’s Lewis scored in the first inning to give the team a 1-0 lead. They extended their lead to 6-0 in the third inning. T.J. Oakes delivered a one-hit triple that scored two runs in that inning. Sibley East answered in the bottom of the third with three runs, cutting the lead to 6-3. With another run in the fourth, Jordan’s lead was only 6-4. In the sixth, Jordan added two more runs and defensively cut down a Sibley East run at home. Tyler Adamek made a strong throw to the relay man, T.J. Oakes, who turned and fired a strike home. Dabu applied the tag, preventing the run from scoring. Todd Abeln is the sports editor for the Jordan Independent. He can be reached at tabeln@swpub.com.
