The True Team format in track and field is to find the best
team, not the best individual.
Unfortunately for Jordan,
they didn’t have the best team at the Section 4AA True Team track meet on
Tuesday, May at Holy Family. The girls team finished ninth, and the boys
finished seventh.
“We did all right,” head coach Gene Adams said. “Our placings in
events were lower tonight, but we were going up against some bigger schools. We
realized as a team we would place lower, but it was good competition for some
of our upper-level athletes.”
One of those upper-level athletes had the track meet of which
some can only dream. Cameron Boy won track and field’s version of the Triple
Crown.
Boy won all three sprint events, the 100-, 200- and 400-meter
races. He also placed third in the long jump.
“It’s a big deal to win the Triple Crown,” Adams
said. “Cameron likes the big meets. He likes to run against the top runners. If
he can get a good start and get ahead early, he’s very tough to beat.”
Boy won the 100 in 11.68 seconds. He followed that up with a
52.21 in the 400 to place first. In the 200, Boy ran a 23.17.
Other top finishes by the Hubmen were turned in by Ted Thuening,
Pedro Velasco, Yuriy Malashenko, David Giancola, and Tanner Adamek.
Thuening finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of
16.78 and fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.66.
Velasco ran the 3,200 in 10:35.29 to finish in fifth.
Malashenko was third in the triple jump and fifth in the high
jump. Giancola placed ninth in 100, sixth in the high jump, seventh in the long
jump, and fourth in the triple jump.
For Adamek, he vaulted over 10 feet and finished in fourth
place.
Jaguars track
The Jordan
girls didn’t have one first-place finish but did have some strong performances.
Seventh-grader Elle Case ran a personal best time of 5:20.04 to
place second in the 1,600. The time was 9 seconds faster than her previous
best. She also ran a 2:28.38 in the 800 to finish in third.
“Elle put in a valiant effort,” Adams
said. “She shows so much poise when she’s running. One wouldn’t think she’s a
seventh-grader, when she acts and performs the way she does.”
Rachael Allison also had a strong meet, as she finished second
in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.55, ninth in the 300 hurdles, 10th in the
long jump, and seventh in the triple jump.
Leah Dietel finished fourth in the discus and third in the shot
put. She threw the discus 98 feet, 9 inches, and the shot put 32-6.5.
Le Center-Cleveland Lions Invitational
In their next meet after the True Team section meet, the Jordan
track teams swept the Le Center-Cleveland Lions Invitational on Friday, May 9.
Both the boys and girls teams won the meet by big margins.
“I’m very pleased with the outcome of the meet,” Adams
said. “It’s the first time we had both the boys and girls win their meets
together. The athletes were excited. They got a trophy and got to do a victory
lap.”
The boys won with 146 points to top Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s
103. The girls scored 154 points to defeat Sibley East’s 119.
For the girls, they won eight events on their way to the crown.
Case was a double winner as she won the 800 and 1,600. Allison
also placed first multiple times as she won the 100 meter high hurdles and the
triple jump.
Audrey Fricke joined Case and Allison in winning two events. She
won both the 100 meters and the long jump.
The other athletes to win events were Dietel in the shot put and
Jeanette Olson in the high jump.
The Jaguars had numerous second-place finishes. Anna Gerpheide
was second in the 200, Michaela Vogel was second in the 3,200, and the 1,600
relay team of Case, Hartman, Gerpheide, and Fricke was second.
For the Hubmen, they had six first-place finishes.
Boy won four times. He won in the 400, 200, long jump and in the
3,200 relay along with Malashenko, Jensen Orlow, and Pedro Velasco.
Malashenko added the triple-jump crown to his resume, and
Velasco won the 3,200. Malashenko also finished second in the 800 and third in
the high jump.
David Giancola didn’t win any event, but he finished second in
100 and the high jump. Ted Thuening was second in the 110 high hurdles and the
300 intermediate hurdles.
