With a proposal for the state to borrow $960 million this year, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty line-item vetoed $243 million of projects suggested by the legislature. The regional public safety training facility in Sand Creek Township received a pledge of $1 million. 

Here's what state Sen. Claire Robling, R-Jordan, said about the results of the bonding bill, how the historic building made the governor's list of funded projects, and the county's willingness to decrease its original request of $3.2 million:

"Obviously, those efforts were successful because the project was not one of the 50-plus projects that were vetoed. I'm very grateful to him for listening to us. ... Obviously, a lto goes on behind the scenes in the conference committee. I would assume that there was some give and take between House and Senate versions of the bonding bill, and fortunately, the training center ended up with the money. ... It felt some confidence that it would receive some funding this year, since it was in the bonding bill last year that it was vetoed. I felt that put us in a fairly good position this year because the project is phased and still in need of funding."

The former Mudbaden Sulphur Springs building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, recently opened for use for training by public safety organizations and others.
