40 people pack public hearing on proposed city tax levy increase

Forty-some people packed the Jordan City Council chamber tonight, as the council held a public hearing regarding its proposed tax levy increase.

City staff proposed a $3.1 million budget, which included $225,000 less in spending than the preliminary budget approved by the council in September. Reacting to disdain voiced by 15 taxpayers, the council began to discuss proposed budget cuts that would severely affect city services and further lower the amount of money collected from taxpayers next year.

Latest issue of Rural Minnesota Journal focuses on rural women

ST. PETER -- The Center for Rural Policy & Development today released its latest edition of the Rural Minnesota Journal. The new 145-page volume contains eight articles examining the challenges and advances for women in rural Minnesota.

“Author after author found that these women face unique challenges when it comes to caring for their children and their elderly parents, finding a job or even navigating the health care system,” said Brad Finstad, executive director of the Center for Rural Policy & Development.

The Jordan girls basketball team is ranked atop the Associated Press Preseason girls basketball poll for Class 2A.

The Jaguars are first after finishing second in last year's state
tournament and returning four of their five starters from that team.

With state of economy, Lions might give out record number of food baskets

The most inspirational event annually for the Jordan Lions Club seems to be the food basket for the needy program.

Last year, the Lions handed out 164 baskets to needy families from the Jordan area and could surpass the record total this year with the state of the economy.

Area churches are signing families up earlier this year to compensate for it and are getting more returns than usual. The deadline to sign up is today, Dec. 1, with distribution on Dec. 9.

Walter “Shorty” Beuch, 93, of Lydia, died at his home on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008.

Visitation was Sunday, Nov. 30, from 3-9 p.m. at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Jordan, and also one hour prior the service at church on Monday.

Celebration of Life service will be Monday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran on Fish Lake, 20200 Fairlawn Avenue, Prior Lake.

Get out your shears: City listens to public comments on taxes tonight

After last week directing city staff to prepare a budget that cuts back $141,500 on general fund spending while increasing debt levy spending $510,600, the Jordan City Council is set to face a public hearing on its proposed 14 percent increase in the amount of revenue garnered from taxpayers.

If a $225,000 budget cut proposed by the council passes next month, the city will have trimmed its budget and tax levy each to about $3.1 million.

Ruth Anne Maddox was only weeks away from being free from her troubled marriage and back in her home state of Indiana when she was found beaten to death in her Prior Lake home Wednesday last week.

The Shakopee Valley News reporter’s husband, Charles Anthony “Tony” Maddox Jr., has been charged in her death. On Friday, bail was set at $1 million in the 43-year-old man’s initial appearance in Scott County District Court. He remains in custody in the Scott County Jail.

Library hours may be cut, the visitors’ center at Cleary Lake Regional Park will likely close for the winter and additional squad car cameras won’t be purchased because of nearly $1.7 million in budget reductions agreed to last week by Scott County commissioners.

In the quest to fill an anticipated $3 million budget hole, commissioners slashed funding for roads, parks, libraries, capital improvements and a retirement benefit fund, as well as reduced support for outside agencies.
