7 candidates file for elections on the last day

Today, seven candidates filed for elections to governmental positions representing the city of Jordan or Helena, Sand Creek, St. Lawrence, or Spring Lake townships, according the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Web site.

They are: state Rep. Mark Buesgens and challenger Tom Rees, Minnesota House of Representatives District 35B; Anthony D. Albright, Scott County Commissioner District 2; Ewald Gruetzmacher, Scott Soil and Water Conservation District1; Linda K. Brown and Scott Tracy, Scott Soil and Water Conservation District 2; and Paul Krueger, Scott Soil and Water Conservation District 3.

Otherwise, here’s where we’re at:

- Albright and Chris Olson of Spring Lake Township and Tom Wolf of Savage filed for election to a Scott County Board seat that will be left vacant by Commissioner Bob Vogel. Commissioner District 2 includes Spring Lake Township. Vogel, the chairman of the board, announced his intention not to run for re-election. Wolf lost to Vogel in the last election for the District 2 seat. To see the story about Vogel, go to www.jordannews.com/news/county-politics/vogel-not-seek-re-election-8079.

- During his fifth re-election bid to represent Minnesota House of Representatives District 35B at the Minnesota Legislature, Buesgens will face Rees and Taylor Kristoffe-Jones. Buesgens, a Sand Creek Township resident who was first elected in 1998, has won the previous five elections, building a stronghold in the past four re-elections. The recent filings make for a rematch of the 2006 election, when Buesgens fought off Rees in the primary and beat Kristoffe-Jones in the general election. Buesgens, R-Jordan, and Tom Rees, R-Lakeville, filed for office today. Taylor Kristoffe-Jones, DFL-Savage, filed July 1, according to the Minnesota secretary of state’s Web site.

- In House District 25B, which includes Helena Township, a three-term mayor and longtime councilmember of Lonsdale filed to run against state Rep. David Bly, DFL-Northfield. Tim Rud, a Republican, filed for election on July 8. Bly, who has served one two-year term in office, filed for re-election on July 1.

- On July 11, Marcia Krueger of Norwood-Young America filed to run against state Rep. Paul Kohls in the race to represent House of Representatives District 34A, which includes St. Lawrence Township. Two years ago, Krueger, a DFLer, lost the election to Kohls, R-Victoria, who filed for re-election on July 8, was elected in 2002, and is serving his third term in office.

- As expected, Steve Sarvi, a Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party-endorsed candidate from Victoria, filed for office in Minnesota's Second Congressional District, which includes Jordan. Sarvi filed July 14, according to the secretary of state's Web site. He will run against U.S. Rep. John Kline, who filed on July 2 for re-election. Kline is a Republican who was elected in 2002 and is serving his third term in Congress.

- All of the candidates for seats on the Scott SWCD board entered the election on the last day of the filing period. There is one race -- Brown and Tracy in SWCD District 2. Brown is from Elko New Market, and Tracy is from Lakeville. Gruetzmacher, who is from Belle Plaine, and Krueger, who is from Prior Lake, are unopposed.

The filing period runs through July 15 for candidates to file for upcoming state and county elections. For more information on state and county candidates, go to www.sos.state.mn.us/home/index.asp?page=136. Candidates can withdraw from the election by July 17.

For three seats on the Jordan City Council that are up for election this November, the filing period runs from Aug. 26 to Sept. 9. Call 952-492-2535 for more information about the city election.
