Highway 282 reopened in time for the Scott County Fair traffic that often loads the main transportation arteries through Jordan.
"The project's done," City Engineer Carol Caron said Wednesday, a day after the road reopened. "In our minds, getting the project done so fast is a plus."
While the stoplight at the intersection of highways 21 and 282 was not yet operational as of Wednesday morning and there have been a few complaints about the new streetlights, the section of Highway 282 between Highway 21 and Mertens Street is open to through traffic.
Chard Tiling & Excavating Inc. of Belle Plaine has substantially completed the $3 million, state- and city-funded project. Caron said there is a so-called punchlist of items -- minor finishing up -- left to do, and the final lift of bituminous won't be done until next year. The final lift of bituminous has been completed at the highway intersection.
The county fair opens today, runs through Sunday, and draws tens of thousands to St. Lawrence Township, near Jordan, each year. Traffic is already back to moving smoothly through the city and will be better as soon as the stoplight is activated.

Kyle, you have mentioned...
Back to page topKyle, you have mentioned that the "dome" in the piazza created noise every time a truck came through the intersection. How's it sound now?
Also, how are you dealing with the incessant beep from the walk/don't walk signal? Does that go on 24/7?
And what of the voice of doom that counts down the seconds one has left before the four horsemen of apocalypse sweep through, and scythe any pedestrians still in the street?
Are you willing to share your first impressions with us?
In a side note, Dave Bendzick mentioned to me at the County Fair, that he thinks the City will be planting some trees along Second - he thought it would be five trees. That'll be nice.
I was at the Farmer's Market...
Back to page topI was at the Farmer's Market this morning and noticed the beeping-it did seem pretty loud. I imagine it would get rather annoying quickly.
Several years ago my son was...
Back to page topSeveral years ago my son was 'bumped' into by a truck while crossing the street, coming home from school at St. John's. I, for one, am grateful for the "voice of doom that counts down the seconds" so that school children know it's time to hurry up and get across the street!
On a side note, have you ever tried crossing the street by Broadway Market? There are two painted crosswalks and yet you can wait 10-15 cars before someone will stop to let you cross. Just the other day, I was crossing with my two young sons on bikes (we had to teach them to get off and walk their bikes across)and pushing a double stroller with two babies in it and I was halfway out into the street and a silver mini van with t he driver talking on her cell phone, and kids in the back, flew right in front of us!!! Sitting at that intersection would be great revenue for the city of Jordan. I'm pretty sure it's a state law to allow pedestrians to cross in a marked crosswalk.
and watch out, I have...
Back to page topand watch out, I have stopped and had cars whip by me on the right while they honk their horn at me. Its a good thing they honked at me because the person crossing heard them and stopped in front of me, so they did not get smacked. I have been trying to find out if I can attach an arm to my car so when I stop no one can get past.
