The Belle Plaine City Hall was among the buildings evacuated late this morning due to a gas leak.

The 200 blocks of Meridian and Willow streets as well as the north side of the 100 block of W. Church St. and the 100 block of W. State St. were evacuated for about two hours.

A 2- to 3-inch gas line was broken by a backhoe during the Church Street construction project, according to the Belle Plaine Police Department.

Employees and residents in the area were asked to leave until the leak was fixed. There were no injuries.

The Belle Plaine police and fire departments responded to the incident.
