Coach Pennie Reynolds-Pearson said the game can be just as exciting as any sporting match. But it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how the game works.

  • Teams: Each team can have up to six members, but only five team members are allowed in each game. The extra team member either helps to run the meet or watches the team compete. Jordan’s teams rotated their members so a different person sat out of every round.
  • Rounds: There are five rounds of competition – a written exam and four oral rounds. The written exam covers 60 points and is taken at the beginning of the meet. The scores on the written round determine in which room each team is placed.
  • Rooms: Each competition is broken into rooms, with three teams competing in a room during each oral round. Which teams compete in which rooms is determined by the point totals after the previous round – so a team who does well in the first round will likely move to a different room for the second round and face more difficult competition. Jordan’s team Plaid was placed in the top room after the written round and didn’t leave once – they won every round.
  • Questions: Each oral round consists of 45 questions. The teams, working together at their table, can buzz in during any point of the question, but the reader will stop reading the question immediately after the first team buzzes in. The teams then get to confer on their answer. The official response is given by the team’s spokesperson.
  • Winners: The point totals from the written round and the four oral rounds are added up to determine the winning team – the team with the most total points.
