I was one of the few in

I was one of the few in attendance at last night's public meeting on Creek Lane/282 intersection improvements. It was extremely disappointing to see only about 12 people from the public.

I learned a great deal (as I'm sure we all did) about traffic capacity and how each type of improvement (4-way stop, signal or roundabout) would perform.

There were a couple of local business owners present, most seemed to favor the roundabout. HOWEVER, many of us have concerns about costs and access to local business both before and after the 282/169 interchange is built. An in-depth study is needed to show how these and other factors play into the equation.

As for how widening 282 would affect this decision--it wasn't even discussed. I think because by the time we see the further widening of 282 we would be at the end of the Creek Lane/282 intersection's life span anyway.

I was very glad to hear from local business owners. All present agreed we need something new. Most seem to lean toward the roundabout for safety, but there are still several unknowns.

Consensus ? A roundabout is favored as a POTENTIAL solution at this intersection, but only if the research proves it better than a traditional signal.

If you want nothing done in St Paul for Jordan and the area Beusgens has served for the last 4 terms, vote for him again. Or, better yet, get a monkey and train it to push the no button and you will get about the same thing.

Front page of 8-7-08 JI said that the City is going to proceed with the project. Has the appeal filed by St. Johns regarding the easement been heard and a judgement made on it? The article was not clear on this.

I have seen nothing in the paper regarding the legal aspects of the issue.

I just voted for that figure, I generally only drive to get back and forth to work. I'm not saying it wouldn't hurt, but there aren't a lot of options.

I love that there are votes for "$8 or more," because it's sort of like saying, "I'll never change. You can't make me." Interesting, but very true.

I feel that a roundabout

I feel that a roundabout will cause more problems and accidents than a simple stoplight. People can not figure out how the roundabout is supposed to work -- especially the older drivers. Jordan has plenty of them.

Sorry, I goofed when I typed

Sorry, I goofed when I typed that 21 is destined to become four lanes. I meant that 282 is being considered for four lanes. There was a disconnect between my fingers and my brain. GoldenGopher, I'm the one who was lost. :-(

And yes, facts about the safety of round abouts are needed. Since I have no data, all I can relate is my experience. Every round about I've driven on has been confusing - for me and for others. Urban round abouts have been especially confusing because one is expected to go directly to the center lane, and stay there until one reaches one's turning point. Then the driver is expected to move to the outer lane (or ring), and make a turn. This requires a driver to be aware of traffic from behind, along side, and entering the round about. Most drivers I've seen simply shun the inner ring, effectively creating a one lane funnel.

The best thing I've noticed regarding round abouts is that there's no way to run a yellow/red light. The worst is that there's no good way for an emergency vehicle to get through an even modestly clogged round about.

I'm willing to be convinced about roundies, but it's going to take some doing to get me to accept something we discarded over a hundred years ago.

Just my opinion. Hopefully we can find some facts.

Regards,
Thom
