I agree with you about

I agree with you about covering the Twins and their presentations, et cetera. Complaining rarely gets results anyway. Those who are widely regarded as some of the most talented photo journalism professionals in the state might not be using their talents best while they are shooting pomp and circumstance.

Too, at the Strib, those ceremonial-type photos rarely see the light of day. As a photographer, you might want to shoot something that runs in the paper or on the Web. Otherwise, it feels like a waste of time. So the challenge to the photographer is to catch, at the very least, an interesting look on someone's face.

And Mathias...if your JOB was going to Twins games and taking pictures...I think you could handle the boring presentaions. How could you complain when your job is to go to Twins games every day.

Hunter was a treat to watch in CF, but it's all about Carlos Gomez now.

He's the man. He's the present.

The best business move the Twins can make is to put a winning team on the field.

Athletes of the good ol'

Athletes of the good ol' days, though, stayed with their teams because they couldn't leave. It wasn't allowed. So I wouldn't be one to glorify the so-called loyalty of many past players.

Like you, I am concerned about an all-too-free free agency. I wish there was more loyalty. That's why I'll boo Torii on his return to Minnesota.

See, that’s where you’re

See, that’s where you’re wrong: you can and should blame Hunter for taking the money and running. Whatever happened to loyalty? What about dedication to a team? What about the fact that Hunter said all along that he was hoping to stay a Twin? Well, if he really wanted to, he’d still be a Twin.

If the franchise made no effort to resign Hunter or indicated to him that he was not in their long-term plans, that would be a different story. But the Twins were offering a contract – they just weren’t able to flash the kind of dollar signs other teams could.

Big-name athletes make a ridiculous sum of money – more money than I’ll ever make, that’s for sure. I could live for years off the money Hunter would make in interest from the contract the Twins were offering.

Athletes can definitely afford to take a pay cut if they really wanted to stay with a team or if they really had loyalty to a franchise. Those who take the money in free agency are just being greedy and really have no respect for their team or the fans.

We can't blame Torii for taking the big payday or a long-term deal. But we can boo him in the Dome on Opening Day.

The economics of baseball

The economics of baseball certainly make it hard on the loyal baseball fan kn the small market.

I really had hoped Hunter would stay with the Twins. He went for the big bucks. Can you really blame him for getting paid?

The business side of the game can be cruel.

I think the Twins have to

I think the Twins have to trade Santana. He can bring a big-time outfielder, a couple young arms and perhaps a third base prospect. Well, maybe.

I think Santana is gone after the 2008 season. He knows he can command $25 million a year and there's no way the Twins can afford that.

So the Twins have to make a deal. However, it won't be easy. Santana has a no-trade clause, so he can nix any deal he wants. Or he can hold the team that wants him hostage. He can say, "Pay me $25 million or year or I will nix the deal and wait for free agency."

So with that kind of money, you are talking about teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Cubs who could afford him. And I think the Twins want to deal him to the National League where they won't have to face him.

It's not like the Twins don't have a host of young, promising arms in Matt Garza, Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, Boof Bonser and the hopeful healthy return of Francisco Liriano. You add two more young prospects in a Santana trade and you may be OK, especially if Liriano returns to ace-like form.

So the Twins almost have to deal Santana. The problem is, they don't hold all the cards in any deal. Santana does, and so do the big market teams who can wait one more season and then go after Santana in free agency.

It's a tough situation for the Twins new GM.

NO TIGERS! Any fan of the bad guys is no friend of the good guys.

We'll see them in the playoffs, but the truth is, this series might be better for the hated Cleveland Indians than anyone else. They play the down-and-out Chicago White Sox, but maybe the South Siders will play spoilers this year.

Happy anniversary.

GO TIGERS!

I'll be at Tuesday night's game. Our sons bought us tickets for the Twins/Tigers match up as a way to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary. Since our hearts belong to both teams, we'll be cheering all night long.

All-Star managers are never

All-Star managers are never in their right minds. There is a lot of pressure to be kosher about how you use players. I haven't seen the numbers, but would it have be appropriate for NL LaRussa to pinch hit his guy in favor of another possibly just-as-clutch All-Star?

Likewise, AL manager Jim Leyland to pick a team full of Detroit Tigers, to pick on of his pitchers to start, or to put the voted-in fielders at the top in the lineup?

Kosher, kosher, kosher. Very politically correct. Just realize that this is not a real game -- that's why we liked that final inning so much.

And if you remember Bud Selig's worst decision as commissioner a few years back, there is no such thing as extra innings in an All-Star game.
