On the 4th, downtown Jordan probably rivaled the show in New Prague. Excellent show.

I have gone from County Road

I have gone from County Road 8 to the falls. It's pretty fun. And during the art festival, I noticed that the rapids were moving pretty well behind the Mini-Met.

But I'm unsure of the rest of the route to the Minnesota River. Is the water high enough? Does it put me out into the middle of Louisville Swamp, where I'll get stuck and have to wade through muck to get home?

Someday, I'll try the whole Jason Allen run (minus going over the waterfall), but I might save it for next spring.

When was the last time you tubed the creek, Jason?

You want a good ride....take Sand Creek from County Road 8 to the Minnesota River. We used to do it all the time, just about 2 1/2 hours worth of riding......although the best rapids on the creek are behind the Mini Met.

R. W. Johnson
Those

R. W. Johnson
Those attending the Memorial Day services were not disappointed by the speakers, the JHS Band nor the weather. I for one, was delighted with the program and the bueatiful weather (sometimes we fall a bit short on that). Amazing was the large turnout by Fire Department and Veterans. They do their duty, often with few thanks and less praise. As I said before, and it bears repeating, When it comes to the Memorial Day Services, Jordan is the 'tallest boy in the class'. On this day, I also consumed enough Pekarna Sausage to provide lunch for the entire Army for one day. (Well maybe, with restricted 'seconds'). Well done Jordan.

R. W. Johnson - The Jordan

R. W. Johnson - The Jordan Community, the Veterans who have and are serving their Country and those who participate in, plan and organize these Services are to be commended for their devotion to country demonstrated so well on this Memorial Day. Not all communities can/will/do put forth the effort and not all communities enjoy such wide participation year after year. If you consider the services, the many who participate and the Community Support you will recognize that on this day each year, Jordan is the tallest boy in the class. Appropriate respect is shown those who have and are serving their country by Citizen and verteran alike. Thank You, Jordan.

It was sort of a mystifying

It was sort of a mystifying story, actually. That's why I quoted it instead of paraphrasing. The story was definitely intriguing, though, and it raises a lot of questions in my mind, too.

Hypothetically, cities could control the space and locations that are available for certain kinds of businesses through the zoning of land in their comprehensive plans. A lot of forces are at work when a large business comes to town. Businesses like Wal-Mart, for example, could buy land that is outside of the city limits and then exercise influence to get the land annexed to the city. It's difficult for that kind of development to be stopped and thus for competition to be limited.

There ought to be a public hearing before any changes to the city code. I'm assuming that Belle Plaine followed that process, as cities usually do. Unfortunately, my copy of the Herald has disappeared, so I can't answer for certain.

As far as the grocery store – what exactly does that mean, and can the city council really do what I think that means?

I must've missed that photo op. Oops. But it was nice to get some pics of Jordan High School students helping the DNR stock the pond with fish from Pelican Lake, which is in Wright County. The DNR will be back next week to continue the process.
