If I’m remembering

If I’m remembering correctly – and I think I am – I was actually driving buy the former gas station while it was being torn down. It seems like that would be the perfect place for a gas station – halfway between New Prague and Shakopee, and at a busy intersection. I wonder what caused its demise?

Kevin Busse e-mailed to

Kevin Busse e-mailed to say:

"My nephew told me about the Jordan Independent website forum on the Jordan Brewery. I am the American Breweriana Association member that wrote the story on the Jordan brewery that appears on the ABA Web site.

"Yes, that cannon in Lagoon Park is the same one that sat in front of the brewery. It is a cannon that was used in the civil war, and according to my dad, that cannon was donated by a relative of our family by the name of Dr. Larson, who was one of the main medical doctors at
Mudbaden. ... The photo of the brewery used on the ABA website article, by the way, was taken back in 1936. It was used on several different postcard designs to promote the brewery.

"I also wrote a book several years ago on the newspaper advertisements of the Jordan Brewery, using newspaper ads and articles from several area and Minnesota newspapers, documenting early advertisements written in German, up until the brewery closed in the late 1940s. If I remember
correctly, I did donate a copy of the book to the Jordan Independent, since several ads and articles from the Independent were used in the book."

Busse agreed to be interviewed, so hopefully, some more information will be coming soon.

“Leonard and Delores

“Leonard and Delores Boeckman, my parents, used to live at 502 S. Broadway," Darlene Boeckman said in an e-mail to me, "which is the first house on the right side after the Brewery going south on 21. This house used to be located just to the left of the Brewery and was used as the brew master’s residence. It was moved on logs, pulled by a team of horses, to where it sits today. At one time, there was a photo hanging at the Feedmill Restaurant, showing it exactly.”

Thanks, Darlene, for helping us look back at Jordan's past.

Darlene Boeckman responded

Darlene Boeckman responded in an e-mail to me:

“Yes, it is the same cannon -- it used to be located by the brewery as far back as I can remember. I was born in 1946. Does anyone know exactly when it was placed at the brewery and when it was moved to Lagoon?"

The Jordanness Lions called me about the cannon last year, because it's on last year's Lions Christmas ornament, and I went out to take a close look at it. The only thing that I saw printed on it is the date and "Hofer," which must be the brand name.

I'm curious to know more about the cannon, too.

Did you notice the cannon in the photo on that site? Do you think it's the cannon that is in Lagoon Park? Does anyone know?

I found an interesting site

I found an interesting site about the Jordan Brewery last week. It gives a little of the history of the brewing company that called Jordan home for years.
