They fly! For real! Today, I watched a Jordan skier go off the 28-meter jump at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington.

Sorry for the confusion! The Scott County HHW Facility is closed every year from December 20 through January 5, to allow us to perform our annual cleaning and restocking.

Normally we are open every Wednesday (12 noon to 6 pm), Thursday (12 noon to 4 pm), and Saturday (8 am to 12 noon), which means that this year we will be closed on December 23, 24, 26, 30, 31, and January 2 for the year-end cleaning.

We will reopen on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, and resume our normal operating schedule at that time. Please visit www.co.scott.mn.us/HHW or call 952-496-8652 if you have any questions. Thank you!

Don't forget that the Scott County HHW Facility will be closed from December 20 through January 5. It will reopen on Wednesday, January 6, at 12 noon.

The HHW Facility is normally open on Wednesdays from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m., Thursdays from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The RE-USE Room is open on those same days, but it does close 15 minutes earlier.

I'm fascinated with the Dakota Conflict of 1862 and the relationships -- some of them very good, many more equally bad -- between the Native Americans and those living on the land they roamed. An interesting place to visit is the Sibley House in the small town of Mendota, where pioneers routinely traded with the natives of the area.

We, humans became so into innovation that we forgot our useless trash at the side that makes clutter to our environment. That is why some explorers set out on journeys to discover things about other people and other places, and Karen Hawes is just that sort. Karen Hawes is going on a different sort of journey, though – she is going on a trip to look at other people's useless junk, and she's described as a trashtronaut. Her journey is detailed at www.trashtrip.com. Her trip will take her from Alaska to Argentina – it would take most people a hefty cash advance to go – looking at people into junk collecting and processes of waste disposal. One man's trash is another's treasure, it's said, and it appears that Karen Hawes is one to brave payday loans and landfills to see what treasures we've left behind.
