I think you’re both right

I think you’re both right – once things start picking up from a sales end, it could still be a while before construction is up again. And the gas prices certainly have a lot to do with it. I have a friend who wanted to move out of the city but couldn’t because the cost of gas to commute to his job would have been ridiculous.

Sales of existing homes

Sales of existing homes needs to improve before new home construction can start to come back. Gas prices do not help either. Many people who might move to Jordan are rethinking it due to the cost to drive to work.

With over 500 home sites

With over 500 home sites available for development in Jordan, and only 2 starts so far this year, it should be a while before growth needs to increase. Once things turn around, it'll take a while for builders to start ramping up again. I think 10 starts this year is reasonable. No one can say for sure when things will pick up, or how strong the recovery will be, but I'd be willing to bet it'll be 3 or more years before we get back to 25 new home starts per year.

I wouldn't mind being wrong.

Building new homes in Jordan

Building new homes in Jordan and Belle Plaine has slowed almost completely to a halt. More development is expected this summer, on the heels of an optimistic population projection in Scott County's proposed comprehensive plan.

Growth should increase again. But when?
