A sports editor I worked with in Indiana only uses two fingers to type and he types faster than most "normal" typists I know. It's like speed hunt-and-pecking.

I once took a typing test at a temp service and they counted every keystroke -- so the fact that I backspaced to correct a word meant that each backspace counted as an error.

Even though I finished the typing assignment under the maximum alloted time, it basically said I typed about 12 words a minute because of the errors.

I must say that I've greatly improved since then -- plus I don't backspace so much with spellcheck (or something) fixing some of the words as I go.

I took a test online once that said I could type between 60-70 words a minute. That’s a pretty big improvement over the 20-30 that I could type in middle school (when I had to take a keyboarding class).

Take a test yourself at www.typingtest.com. (My most recent score was 66 words per minute with 90 percent accuracy.)

Uh, count every word then subtract the ones with errors -- that's the way I was taught.

How many words can you type in 1 minute? How'd you learn to be so fast/slow/mediocre?
