My husband and I had each

My husband and I had each been married before so we both had plenty of everything.

My hairy dog couch was given the boot in favor of his L-shaped leather sofa for our family room and then his ex-wife gave us their old sofabed and recliner that she and her new husband were replacing and that's in our living room.

We each had a queen size bed but neither of us liked the other's. So we got ourselves a new bed and one of the old ones went into my daughter's/guest bedroom and one is still in the garage waiting transport to Bridging in Bloomington.

We also had a combine FIVE sets of pots and pans, FOUR sets of silverware, TWO blenders, TWO toaster ovens and ONE toaster, untold amounts of Tupperware/Rubbermaid containers -- some without matching lids, and some lids without containers -- and endless supplies of glassware.

We weaned our collections, keeping my this and his that (whichever was better/newer) and put the rest in a box for Bridging -- about three years ago (it's still in the garage).

We've kept all of the bathroom towels and slowly rotate old ones into the rag bag and buy new, matching ones as needed.

There are some of his things I'd like to ditch completely but I'm satisfied knowing they are at least in the crawlspace and not in plain view. Of course, I'm sure he loves every piece of gaudy crap I brought with me -- including all those knick knacks my daughter made for me in elementary school ;-)

Have you gone through the monumental task of combining households with a significant other? How did it go? How did you decide whose couch to keep or what style to go with? What got ditched in the process?

Share your tales (good and bad, easy and horrific) of making two into one here or email mfrancisco@swpub.com. Your comments may be used in an upcoming print article.
