While I am aware of the meaning of most of the things my daughter texts (I admit to having to ask for explanations on some), I try not to do it myself because I feel like it's perpetuating illiteracy.

Of course, sticking to my guns means it takes me longer to text and opens me to the ridicule of my daughter, who often reminds me of my texting inadequacies with a "Mom, u dnt have to spell evrythng out!"

I simply loathe the texting language. I am with Brandon and agree that I don't particularly like seeing it in places outside of a cell phone. It hasn't exactly made me want to throw up but I am blessed with a fairly strong stomach.

I can’t stand people who talk in text. Just reading the comments on sites like YouTube and Myspace where people write things like “U R Gr8” makes me want to throw up.

I do know, though, the basics of the text language. In fact, my friends from high school and I would often use it to mock those who actually used it regularly. We still sometimes will say “lol” while talking to each other over the phone.

OK, by comparison, I'm an old lady and I can't believe I know some of these things and you don't! (Of course, having an 18-year-old daughter texting me helps me to learn).

Now that you know LOL is laughing out loud, did you know that ROFLOL is rolling on the floor laughing out loud?

Computer lingo survey

The more I've messaged on MySpace or Facebook, the more technologically illiterate it seems I've become. For the past few weeks, I've tried to decipher what people mean when they write :D or :P at the end of their sentences. I only know :) means smile and :( means frown.

The other day, my 16-year-old brother instructed me to use ;) for a wink. I always thought ;) was just a typo as someone attempted to :) My brother also told me LOL means "laugh out loud." I had always used it as "lots of love." Which definition do others think is correct?
