Tailgating. If I'm driving slower because I'm not sure how my car is going to behave on the snow or ice, I really don't appreciate some big four-wheel drive truck parking on my back end. It won't make me go any faster, but it might make me take him out with me if I begin to spin.

I haven't had any accidents yet this year -- knock wood -- but I did used to have a bit of a reputation for winter mishaps. In about 1998-99, I was going through a divorce and my daughter and I moved from the house in the country to an apartment in the city -- all in rural Indiana. It was a much closer drive to work for me and all on city streets vs. county roads or two-lane highways.

About March that season as the final snow was melting, I was driving into or out of town when my daughter, who was 6 years old at the time, blurted out, "Hey, mommy, we didn't get in any accidents this year." And who says kids don't have early cognizant memories.
