That would be the button Ray. I asked the same thing and they said there was a printing mistake.....if thats the case they would have been printing me new ones that same night. You dont accept something if its not what you ordered.

I would also agree. I missed the King and Queen speech at the halftime of the game.

Remember the old days of Homecoming. The large floats parked at the field at the mill pond. Now a float consists of a hay wagon with 200 kids on it.

newjordanite

Where is our town pride? Wearing the school colors is an excellent way for the community to bond together.

Also, what happened to introducing the Homecoming King and Queen at halftime of the football game? As a new Jordanite, it is disappointing to attend games and not see support for the school.

Back in the mid-80s, the football helmets just had a "J" on them. I think the change to the current Purdue U-ish logo came well after I graduated in 1987. I know a few years after graduating the student council was working on a new logo of a railroad worker kneeling on tracks with a sledgehammer raised above his head (working on the RR?). The JI had a sketch of it; not too sure of the year. On the chest of the overalls was the old logo of the winged wheel.

I don't know what happened with that logo, if it's still being used or not, as I've been out of state (and country) for most of the time since graduation.

School colors are something

School colors are something we should take pride in. So many additions have been made to athletic uniforms in the past few years. The football team for some reason has a train on their helmet. Baseball has black as one of their dominant colors. I can understand why we have the Jaguars for girls and Hubmen for boys teams. But why can't the boys teams have one mascot? We are all over the place with mascots and colors. There are bigger problems in this world, but it would be nice if our community didn't have all this confusion over school colors and mascots. It should be simple. I would like to encourage our administration to address this.

You are all correct for the term hubmen. Maybe the student council needs to relook at the mascot/team name. I am all for consolidating into one team, not one for boys, one for girls. I also strongly agree with Jason. The school colors are maroon and gold. If you need to add a little black or white that is fine, but let's run with colors as designated. It looks ridiculous when there is not an ounce of either color on the football coaches outfits and the lack of gold replaced with prominent black for the cheerleaders.

The colors were maroon and gold, but that wasn't supported strongly even in the letterman's jackets of the day. With the old "Hubmen" logo now defunct it would seem that with each generation of students it all is up review and possible change.

As far as the name, wasn't it more like Jordan was the "hub" of the county, being sort of centrally located some 7 miles or so from surrounding communities. I was told it [seven miles] was the distance a team of horses could be taken back and forth in a day allowing for business to be conducted at the destination before the return.

JeffyB - that makes sense of where the hubmen name came from. I like that explanation. I always thought the name came from Jordan being in the middle or "hub" of Scott county, that's why the wheel came into play.

And here I thought it was

And here I thought it was "42"...

On the uniform thread (no pun intended), I was surprised a few years ago when the band was just wearing street clothes, and not uniforms during a parade (maybe Heimetfest?)... It wouldn't have been bad if there was even some sort of coordination of colors, but I don't recall there being any.

One thing we brought up (mid 80s) for the HS band was a "casual uniform", khakis and polo shirts with a band logo on it... Unfortunately it didn't go through, but I've seen other HS bands wearing similar outfits, still looking sharp.

RE: the Hubmen name - I know a couple of years after graduating, the paper did a story on it as the student council was working on a new logo design. The Hubmen name (as I recall) was based on the fact that Jordan was a rail hub at one time, and those who worked on the rail hub lines were called "Hubmen".

Not sure how we got from

Not sure how we got from school colors to the meaning of life, but I'll comment. I can identify with your buddy, Mathias, in saying that much of life is about moving stuff around. We just moved one adult child to Duluth, another home from college in Bemidji, and our oldest is still moving stuff, little by little, from our house to hers. However, if this were the meaning of life, I'd be ready to hang it up. The meaning of life is to make a positive difference while you're here. It's as simple as that. We only have so much time, so it's our job to leave the planet and its inhabitants in better condition than they were in when we arrived. Keep that in mind, and it's easier to keep things in perspective ... including whether Jordan's school colors are maroon and gold or maroon and grey or black and gold or whatever.

I have a story to tell, but

I have a story to tell, but it will be a little off subject. I apologize in advance.

I always really liked my neighbors Nick, Kelly, Nat and Will. (In the spirit of full disclosure, as politicians say, Nick was a teacher who used to work with Mark Buesgens. They have all but entirely opposite political views, Nick told me.)

A couple years ago, as they were moving something like 10 blocks away, Nick stopped for a minute outside to say to me that he was really, really sick of moving and packing and shifting stuff around in his little two-story. He'd fixed up the house the way he wanted it, and then it filled up with too much stuff, he built a new garage, and then that filled up with more stuff. He got so much stuff that he had to buy a new house, with new repairs to do, but at least it'd have more space. For stuff.

"I've found the meaning of life," Nick said. "Moving stuff. The meaning of life is moving stuff around."

Of course, he said it with sarcasm pouring out of his veins. But it's almost gotten to that point in many of our lives, hasn't it?

Matt, just wait till you have a house, a wife, and way too much stuff. You'll find out the meaning of life -- it ain't stuff, that's for sure. Easy for me to say that, though, when I don't throw anything away.

(Mathias Baden is the editor of the Jordan Independent. He can be reached at editor@jordannews.com.)

Andrew, didn't we wear

Andrew, didn't we wear yellow uniforms with maroon trim on the B-squad baseball team? I remember that we called them our "mellow yellows," and they were absolutely hideous. I remember someone saying they were old softball uniforms, and I think my mom has team photos from when she played to verify that. I'm pretty sure they worked to our advantage, however, in that the yellow shirts and pants gave our opponents seizures and fits of laughter that kept them from focusing on the game. I always liked the maroon and gray and black color scheme, and I never really cared that gray and black were never associated with JHS athletics. We have three team nicknames, why not have three team colors? Once Jordan switches its nickname in every sport to the "Jaguars," instead of the gender-biased name "Hubmen," we can decide on two primary colors once and for all. Plus, we won't have to endure chants of "What's a Hubman" from opponents.
There's a feature story for you, Mathias: What the hell is a "hubman?" I'm sure a lot of Jordan residents have no idea. And when did our girls' teams become known as the "Jaguars?" Why's it called the "bullpen?" What's the meaning of life?

Hold on, hold on, hold on. Aside from the colors issue, Jordan's cheerleaders have to purchase their own uniforms? What the heck? As a mom of two former Jordan cheerleaders, this is really surprising to me. It wasn't that way as recently as the fall of 2001. Sure, my girls had to buy their shoes, but the whole uniform? You're kidding! Does the school have any financial commitment to the cheerleading program? Is the district paying for an cheerleading advisor and transportation to out-of-town games? This seems very odd to me. How did this happen?
