Again, congrats to the Jags

Again, congrats to the Jags and Coach Chambers!

In response to godfather, Chambers' first year at Jordan in '02 (my senior year) was a rough start. Chambers cut 2 seniors (who were in volleyball since they were young) from the playoff roster, only to lose in the first round. She brought up younger players. This outraged the student body and was the reason for the walkout of the gym and possibly stopped other girls from staying in volleyball.

I am not bashing Chambers, she knows what she is doing now. Not so much in her first year.

But again, Congratuations Jaguars!

Now is not a great time to

Now is not a great time to bring up bad memories.

Printing a front-page story about the Jaguars volleyball team and some of its departed members was not my favorite thing to do. I believe it was a good choice to do the story, and the truth has shown itself throughout the whole of the newspaper's coverage.

I want the readers of the Jordan Independent to know that I am a supporter of volleyball and all other sports programs in Jordan, and your local newspaper will continue to cover them better than any other news organization. The JI has always written about sports, but it has taken great strides in the last few years, adding a reporter who solely covers sports -- he also writes for the Shakopee Valley News.

Congratulations to Colleen

Congratulations to Colleen and the Jags!

What an awesome accomplishment! They completely deserved it; they all put in many extra hours devoted to the sport. My question is: Where are all of the nay-sayers of Coach Chambers now? If I recall correctly, it wasn't that long ago that this newspaper had many articles related to her coaching style and some 'slighted' parents and players. Colleen is a coach with passion. Wouldn't we like to see all of our sports teams with a state tournament championship banner in the high school gym? We all know that you don't get the glory with a coddling approach. I'm extremely proud of her and her team and now I hope that the people who wanted her fired in years past are seeing the error of their ways.

The Jags got a lot of

The Jags got a lot of publicity this week, definitely. I didn't necessarily expect them to -- the bigger papers generally put small towns and fringe suburbs, whichever you consider Jordan to be, on the back burner. That's why the Legion didn't get the press it deserved. TV stations and the Strib missed the story.

They couldn't miss the volleyball team, because they always deem the Minnesota State High School League events worth covering. There are two news factors especially at work here: small town with a young team overcomes seemingly great odds to win championship; and it's the town's first state championship in this sport.

Big media also loves the coach's kid and kind of story. They like the sisters who play together angle, too. Both of those are good stories, ones that are very familiar to Jordan readers.

The JI will continue to give you the best coverage of your local sports. Hopefully, as this Web site gets rolling, we'll be as timely or more timely than the competition, too. That has been their main advantage thus far.

Brittany Chambers and Leah

Brittany Chambers and Leah Dietel of Jordan High School have been named recipients of this year’s Wells Fargo All-Tournament Team award for Class AA girls volleyball. The award recognizes student athletes who demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship, team commitment, athletic ability and leadership during the state high school tournaments, according to a Wells Fargo press release.

Congratulations to the Jaguars and Brittany for being selected as the athlete of the week for KARE 11!

We're proud of those Jaguars.

Here's a question... will the success of volleyball help or hurt Lumpy's basketball team this year? Why do I ask? The top players on the volleyball team are also the top players on the basketball team. No rest or time to get ready for basketball, but the confidence they gained in volleyball could help them come playoff time.

Matthias - why did the Jaguars receive a lot of statewide pub. when they won the championship,(rightfully so) but the Legion team was mentioned only in the J.I. for winning state and regions? Is it because legion isn't associated with MSHSL?

The St. Cloud Times had some

The St. Cloud Times had some nice things to say about the Jordan Jaguars.

"The Jaguars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match with an assault ..."

"They are by far the best team we've seen all year."

"... we can't be disappointed with effort when you're playing a team like that."

"... the credit to Jordan's success goes to Chambers, who was virtually all over the court ..."

Sounds like a team you know, right? Read the full story at:

Brittany Chambers was named

Brittany Chambers was named to the All-Metro second team. She led the metro in kills and service aces, which makes me feel she should have been on the first team and maybe even metro player of the year.

It's too bad Jordan players don't get the same credit as players from big cities.

Good Luck Jags at State!

The question is who will be

The question is who will be the team MVP, league MVP, metro MVP, state MVP? I know the last two probably don't exist, but seriously, this is a team with a lot of valuable players. And they are all young.

There's plenty more where this comes from.
