My late grandfather's fraternity paddle, presumably used to whack other, younger University of Minnesota students, was hanging on my dorm room wall at Northwestern College in Roseville. A neat decoration, really.

But one day, my roommate proved to be an all-too-obvious target. When he bent over, I wound up on his rear.

Now, he's not a small guy. He played football and worked out a lot more than I. His response was to come after me. I ran out of the room and into a large common space where students study and -- mostly -- goof off.

I don't remember or know how I grabbed a full glass of water on the way out of the room, but I'm glad I did. When he came barreling out of the room wielding my paddywhacker, I darted around a corner. He followed. To his surprise, and according to my plan, he got dowsed.

I really should remind him of that. We had a good laugh, although I think I took a couple of wicked lashings courtesy of the paddle.
