It's cool, isn't it? I'd love to say I had a copy or knew for sure where to find one.

The guy who sent the photo to me via e-mail is a former antique dealer from Jordan. He sold all of his postcards, but he still collects photos of Jordan that he downloads from eBay listings. Every once in a while, the postcards come up on eBay, he told me.

The Scott County Historical Society sells reproductions of various postcards, but not this one.

Sorry, that's kind of a non-answer.

Mathais, do you know where a person could get a copy of that postcard? Is it one of the available reprints in the antique shops in town, or is it a "one of a kind"?

Thanks!

David.

Joe Koenig of New Prague

Joe Koenig of New Prague remembers the Cave of the Colored Sands, although he doesn’t remember it by that name. In a phone call to the Jordan Independent office, Koenig said he remembers there was a cave about 25 feet deep at a comfortable point. He said you could walk in if you stooped over a little.

A former Jordan resident, Koenig said he remembers visiting the cave with his class in school. Koenig was a Jordan student from 1928 through 1931, and again from 1935 through 1937. He remembers a cool stream flowing out of the cave. The kids in his class would use the water to cool their pop, which was in glass bottles at the time.

Koenig hadn’t thought about the cave in years until he saw the picture in the Independent.

"I had completely forgotten about it," he said.

As to why the cave was closed off, Koenig didn't know.

About Jordan's cave, Scott

About Jordan's cave, Scott County Historical Society Director Kathleen Klehr said in an e-mail:

"Here is the scoop on the 'Colored Sands Cave' from the Jordan photo/postcard. We cannot find anything written about the cave or colored sands.

"One of our volunteers contacted her uncle who has lived in Jordan all his life. According to him, there used to be a cave on the right of the falls, but it was closed up years ago.

"As to the colored sands ... there were a number of rocks on the right of the falls where people used to sit to have their picture taken (with the falls in the background). The rocks were sandstone, and I figure that at different times of day, the rocks would take on different colors."

That's all for now, Klehr said. But if anyone knows more about the cave or has stories to tell (especially when or why was the cave closed?), please post a comment about it.
