I met my wife on a USO trip

I met my wife on a USO trip to Keukenhof Gardens, in Holland, while we were stationed in Germany (me with the USAF, her with DoD Dependent Schools as a teacher).

She's originally from Texas, so while we were on a USO trip to Paris, France, we found where the old Republic of Texas Embassy was (it's currently a hotel), and I proposed to her on what was Texas soil.

We married later that year, having the official ceremony in Texas, and followed it with a "renewal of vows" ceremony a week later at my parents place in MN, allowing family and friends who weren't able to make it to Texas for the wedding to be part of the ceremony.

My husband went all out when

My husband went all out when he proposed to me...

It was my 24th birthday. We'd been dating only 6 months, but he knew that at Christmas, only weeks earlier, I was a bit disappointed not to be getting a ring. He also knew that I wouldn't be expecting it on my birthday, since Christmas had failed to provide the ring.

He planned ALL DAY LONG! By 7pm, when he picked me up, I had spent the day with my family, took a long bath, done my hair and make up and I was sitting on the couch watching "Friends."

He took me several places...my favorite retraunt for dinner, our frist date restraunt for desert, Northwestern College's chapel (he knew I wanted to get married there)...here's where it gets really good.

At Northwestern, he walked me down the isle with my eyes closed. Then, on the alter in front was a packages about the size of a tie box. In it was a love letter...no ring. He told me we had one more place to go...

He took me to our church, where he was the youth pastor, turned on all of the Christmas lights and just one spot light in the front of the chapel.

At the alter there was a bouquet of flowers with one red rose, a CD player with our favorite songs and a bowl and towel. We sat on the steps and he read the Scripture where Jesus washed the disciples feet, then he told me that he loved me so much that he wanted to demonstrate the "full extent of his love" by washing mine.

After that, he took the red rose out of the bouquet and heald it above eye level. He said, "a rose reminds me of you, because it is said to be the most beautiful...but, it's not what is on the outside that is the most beautiful, it is what is on the inside..." he lowered the flower and my ring was inside of it.

He proceeded to ask me to marry him and put the ring on my finger. Then, our favorite song came on and he asked me to dance.

It was AMAZING! The only problem...I'll never get a better birthday present than I did that day!

Bonanza Returns Movie
My

Bonanza Returns Movie

My husband proposed during the Bonanza Returns movie that was on TV. He did not even wait for a commercial. I did not know that he was serious about the proposal at first. When he asked me if I heard what he said, I asked if he was serious. It was then that he got down on one knee.

Now, isn't that romantic???

For me, it isn't how the proposal happens but the fact that the person wants to ask THE question.

I am not sure Brandon, how

I am not sure Brandon, how reference to "involving the police' relates to the proposal. Some might get the idea that the proposal 'somewhat involves a shotgun'. This, in the older sense, to encourage the proposal to be forthcoming. I would agree that I have probably exterpolated the reference a bit too far.

The general consensus around

The general consensus around the table at which I was sitting during this conversation is that highly elaborate or public proposals were no good, unless they involved the police. Two people told stories of friends who had been involved in fake arrests, traffic stops or court hearings that were actually ruses to hide fancy proposals. Everyone at the table thought those were cool.

I worked for a guy by the name of 'Dumas Dubbe' in Mpls in the mid-1940's and, since Dubbe is not a name as common as Johnson in MN, ever hear of him?

Be not so picky, any proposal is better than no proposal. I told that to my wife, she provided 'minimal' approval to the comment. I added, 'Never look a gift horse in the mouth.' She commented, 'You ain't no gift horse'!

Both sexes have faults,

Both sexes have faults, right?

My darling wife and I always laugh a little at the proposals made during Twins games, because I know she'da been the one to punch me in the lip and walk out of the place if that was how I had proposed marriage.

In truth, a walk along Lake Michigan after a wedding we'd driven seven hours to attend was a much better alternative.

Guys can be so slow to understand that most women won't appreciate a sporting-event marriage proposal. Women, on the other hand, see the ring and usually say yes, no matter how lame the venue. I know I'm stereotyping. Sorry -- I know there are exceptions to the rule, too.

A good man knows the difference between a proposal and a proposition and also knows what a woman wants....

My boyfriend knows he would

My boyfriend knows he would be in big trouble if he even thought about trying to propose to me in some large public venue. I think a marriage proposal should fit the couple but personally, that's a special moment that I'd like to share with my significant other and not the rest of the world. (Unless of course, it led to corporate funding of a dream wedding :)
