The Minnesota Twins are making a few moves this offseason. Here's what's happened:
- We've signed Joe Nathan. (Side note: Eddie Guardado is available. Not that I'd want anyone at the back of the bullpen besides Nathan.)
- Luis Rodriguez is gone.
- Outfielders Josh Rabe and Lew Ford, infielders Tommy Watkins and Alejandro Machado, and catcher Matthew LeCroy were outrighted to Triple-A Rochester.
- Torii Hunter is supposedly not negotiating with the Twinks. He's a free agent. Besides Hunter, the active roster includes only two centerfielders -- Jason Tyner and Denard Span.
- Goodbye Carlos Silva? He's also a free agent. So much for that hometown discount he was offering the Twins. Besides Silva, there are a number of potential starters on the active roster.
- The Twins are using roster spots to protect the following players who saw limited time at the big-league club: Darnell McDonald, outfield; Garrett Jones, first base or outfield; Brian Buscher, third base; Chris Basak, third base; Jose Morales, catcher; Oswaldo Sosa, pitcher; Ricky Barrett, pitcher; Nick Blackburn, pitcher; Carmen Cali, pitcher; Jesse Crain, pitcher; Julio DePaula, pitcher; Francisco Liriano, pitcher; Jose Mijares, pitcher; Glen Perkins, pitcher; and Errol Simonitsch, pitcher.
- This year, from what I've read, I don't expect negotiations on contract extensions for Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer, or Johan Santana. At least -- and I'm hoping here -- until after the team tries to get Hunter to return.
- The Twins are going to need to make use of the free-agent market this year. There are some holes.
