On Tuesday, I went to Mankato to draft a fantasy team for a pitchers pool. Wins are the only statistic that count in this league.
I would've picked Johan Santana first, but I didn't get the first pick in the draft. I'm kind of a homer in fantasy drafts, but as it is, I don't have any Twins on my team. Here's who I've got:
- Daisuke Matsuzaka, Boston;
- Greg Maddux, San Diego;
- Mark Buehrle, Chicago White Sox;
- Kevin Millwood, Texas;
- two guys I can't remember off hand (probably a bad sign, but I'll add their names to the list later);
- Anibal Sanchez, Florida;
- Bartolo Colon, Cleveland;
- and Mark Prior, Chicago Cubs (alternate).
What do you think? In a league of about a dozen guys, I'm going to get smoked, right? I have a few solid guys, but I also know a lot of things have to fall into place for this to work out.
By the way, the rules are as follows: We get to draft eight guys and an alternate. At the all-star break, everyone drafts one more pitcher to be an alternate. If you want the alternates' stats to count, you have to use a roster move. And you only get two roster moves a year. (I like the ultra low-maintenance leagues.)

I forgot that I drafted...
Back to page topI forgot that I drafted Chris Capuano of Milwaukee and Woody Williams of Houston.
If Strib writer Patrick Reusse saw my team, he'd say I am the Minnesota Twins of my fantasy league -- none of my pitchers are good. (I tend to believe the Twins have a decent rotation, but that's beside the point.) Despite drawing the fourth spot in the fantasy draft, I have only one No. 1 starter, one in the No. 2 slot, four in No. 3 slots, a No. 4 starter, a former star who was sent to Triple-A, and former Cy Young who won't pitch until late April.
To say this is a gamble is an understatement. I need to believe in miracles.
