MLB.com lists Silva as a top free agent

No votes yet

MLB.com lists Carlos Silva as a top free agent, along with the likes of Alex Rodriguez, Aaron Rowand and Andruw Jones.

Silva went 13-14 with a 4.19 earned-run average. He walked only 36 batters in 202 innings pitched. His 89 strikeouts were a career high for the starter.

Still, I don't know that I would pay the guy $10 million or whatever he's asking.

That kind of money for Silva...

That kind of money for Silva shows just how much pitching is at a premium.

I like Silva, but at the back end of your rotation. And the Twins can't afford $10 million for a fourth a fifth starter.

Silva deserves to get paid though, despite the average stats. If he had a little better run suppport, he might have gone 16-12. He's a decent pitcher - not great by any means - but he can eat innings, he throws strikes and he's been pretty durable.

Agreed on all accounts. We got a great deal in the trade for Eric Milton, who has since flopped mightily. Milton's also a free agent this winter.

Yesterday, a story in the St. Paul Pioneer Press said Silva might fetch $9 million, not $10 million, I guess. Whatever.

There are eight pitchers on the market who I'd rather have than Silva. Don't know if we could get them as cheaply as Silva, though. They are John Thomson, Freddie Garcia, Matt Clement, Bartolo Colon, Livan Hernandez, Matt Herges, Brian Lawrence, and Kerry Wood.

Kerry Wood is gone. Not...

Kerry Wood is gone. Not that it was going to happen anyway. You know which pitcher the Twins are going to sign........exactly, none of them.

I would take, let's see, that Dodgers deal for Johan that gives the Twins Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche, and Clayton Kershaw. And go get someone that can play DH.

Kubel, Kemp and Cuddyer in the OF; Morneau, Punto (because you know they are going to stick with him), Bartlett and LaRoche around the infield; Mauer catching; Monroe DH'ing, (hopefully they can bring someone else in as well), then a staff of Baker, Liriano, Garza, Slowey and Boof. But they really need to know Liriano is going to be ready. Maybe get a moderately priced pitcher just in case and start Liriano in the pen, until you're sure he is ready.

No, that team isnt' going to win any pennants, but at least it is young and interesting. I think that is all you can hope for right now.

Well, well. With the new news (if it can be called that) the Yanks and Twins are talking...

OK, NY you want Johan? The Twins will take Joba and/or Hughes, and Melky Cabrera and Eric Duncan and maybe something else too. That is where the talks start and end. I think they need Cabrera, Duncan (who is a 3B) and at least one of the pitchers. Maybe even throw in Shelley Duncan, who can play DH and hit for power.

Looks like the Mets have had talks with Bill Smith too....

OK, let the bidding begin. The more the merrier, just jack up the price for Johan more....just don't let it get too jacked up that teams don't end up wanting to deal.

They could go into next season with Johan and then if things don't go well, trade him at the deadline. But I think they might be shooting themselves in the foot offer-wise if they go that route.
