Lately, I've been hot at hoops

Lately, I've been a hot shooter on the basketball court.

I have always considered myself a much better defensive player than offensive and a much better coach than a player. But I've been lighting up the scoreboard in my two weekly pickup leagues at churches in Woodbury and Maplewood, and I wasn't so bad at the Maplewood Community Center last Saturday.

Last Sunday, I scored about 25 one-pointers (we score what would normally be two-pointers as one point and three-pointers count as two), almost half of my team's points toward the end of the night.

I must admit that I had some tough defenders on me, as well, and I did get blocked pretty badly once. One of the defenders got me for a charge. I disagreed with both calls, but whatever -- it's pickup basketball.

Last night, I coached my team of high school seniors in a practice at my alma mater, North High in North St. Paul. They play rec ball in Maplewood. There, I shot well, too.

That's what shooting buckets four days a week and working out the other three days will get you. The more you work out, the better you play.

Does your shoulder hurt?

You know, from patting yourself of the back?

To be fair, I wish I played more basketball. When I was younger, I was always playing some sport of some kind. Even if it meant I was outside shooting baskets by myself.

Now, sadly, I am too lethargic for my own good, increasingly out of shape, and feeling fatter by the day.

Most people assume I’m an excellent basketball player just because I’m tall. Most people are very, very wrong. I can’t run, jump, or shoot the ball and I get nervous when it’s passed to me during a game. And my shooting mechanics are awful. Instead of arcing my shots, I just sort of throw them straight at the backboard.

That said, I love playing and I haven’t played a real game of basketball since college. I’d take a pickup game anytime you’re ready to lose, Mathias.

You know, if I had picked up a basketball anytime in the past five years, I might take you on, but sadly, its been a while.

I will say I was a pretty fair player at one time...you know, before I got fat and slow.
