State Rep. Paul Kohls writes in his e-mail newsletter:
"Greetings!
"Hello again and welcome to my first legislative email update for 2007!
"It has been a while since my last update, I send out periodic email updates during the legislative session with information to keep you informed about what is happening in your government.
"Last week all 134 House members were sworn into office and this week is our first full week of floor sessions and committee hearings. One issue I hope we address is achieving more oversight of government grants to nonprofit agencies. The Legislative Auditor released a report last week showing that Minnesota paid more than $4.7 million to nonprofits in 2005 without properly tracking how the money was used. The report also criticized a process that allows no-bid grants, a major lapse in judgment on the state's part. Many of us in the House fear the government could have handed out several billions of dollars in untracked grants going back many years.
"One bill that could come up for a vote as early as this week would make our tax laws conform with federal tax changes passed just before the new year. This could mean good news for teachers who buy classroom supplies and low- to middle-income Minnesotans paying for college. I will keep you informed so you have this info in time to fill out your taxes!
"ALSO - Join me for a townhall meeting on Saturday, January 20 at 8:30 a.m. at the Jackson Town Hall. It's free and open to everyone, so drop by for some coffee and juice and let me know what's on your mind!
"Thank you for subscribing to my updates - if you know anyone you think might like to receive them, encourage them to sign up at my Web site, http://ww3.house.leg.state.mn.us/members/members.asp?district=34A, by clicking on E-mail Updates.
"Take care!"
