Jordan successfully earned a Safe Routes to School grant this year, so City Engineer Carol Caron asked the city council if it would like to apply again.

Applications for the state program are due Nov. 16.  Cities can ask for up to $175,000 for the construction of sidewalks to get children safely to schools.

This year, the state gave Jordan money for a trail along Aberdeen Avenue, aka County Road 61. 

The council decided Sept. 17 to ask for $95,000 for a sidewalk on the east side of Sunset Drive, from Hillside Drive to Rustle Road. Councilmembers disagreed about whether that was the most important section of potential sidewalk, but the majority of the council agreed that the city should apply for $60,000 to build a sidewalk along the east side of Hope Avenue, from just north of where townhouses are under construction to Hillside Drive.

Mayor Ron Jabs said that the third option, which would require an $85,000 solution, suggested by the city staff was his top priority. 

The section of Old Highway 169 (County Road 66) from Hope to Aberdeen avenues is well traveled, would complete a loop of trails, and is the most unsafe. Those problems remain unaddressed, Jabs said. "I'm really hard pressed."

The council voted unanimously to apply for funding for the Hope Avenue and Sunset Drive sidewalks.
