It's over -- kiss Twins' playoff hopes goodbye

» Read similar stories filed under:

I was a Ken Griffey Jr. fan until five minutes ago, when I checked ESPN.com's story about him being traded to the hated Chicago White Sox.

It's over. The Twins playoff chances are nill. Say goodbye.

This hired gun, Griffey, is a difference maker. The Twins are in big, big trouble. You think the White Sox hit a lot of home runs? Well, add to the lineup one of the best homer hitters and see how many more homers the others in the lineup get just because they're going to see better pitches.

The only good thing about this trade is that the White Sox come to town 19 times a year. I'd love to see Griffey that often. I just wish he wasn't on the first-place team in the Twins' division.

One player does not make or break a team. Ken Griffey, Jr. is a good player. However, the Twins have GREAT players. I still say that the Twins have a very good chance to take the division.

They aren't getting the Griffey of a few years ago. If you look at his numbers this year they are almost identical to Jason Kubel. I don't think you would be saying the same thing if they signed kubel. The White Sox ability to homer is not their problem. Their pitchers are their problem and will be their downfall.

My former boss is a huge White Sox fan and here's what he had to say in an e-mail sent Monday morning:

"How about those White Sox??? I think they start a series tonight in Minnesota, and I'm more than a bit worried about that ... Don't know that the Sox can hold on as they have a rough road schedule
second half and seems like they keep having a bunch of guys on injured list. Not good timing. I still think the Twins will come roaring back in
the second half and take it all. They usually do!!"

Of course, that was before the whole Griffey thing, so I'll have to check on what he thinks now.

It's still all about pitching. Griffey is a nice edition, but it's not the old Griffey.

Losing Casilla hurts the Twins more.

The Twins have a young staff. Their biggest question can they hold up in the dog days of August and through September?

Based on what little baseball knowledge I have, I think the Twins have a shot at the postseason so long as they hang close to first place in the division the rest of the way. While it may still be all about pitching, it seems to me that a big part of winning in baseball is getting hot at the right time offensively. If the Twins can stay close, they have the pitching and defense that could work with a hot streak to create a playoff push.

In recent years, the Twins' playoff nemeses have been the Angels, the Yankees, or both of them. The Angels added big-time power hitter Mark Texeira, and the Yankees lineup is bolstered by Ivan Rodriguez, a ballerina-like defenseman who also wields a dangerous bat. Before the Twins can get to either of those teams, they have to go through the White Sox and Twins-killer Ken Griffey Jr.

Pray for another Cinderella second half, guys, but also pray for some really good luck going into the playoffs.

Sorry to say it, but unless Francisco Liriano comes through and Delmon Young, Michael Cuddyer, and a few other sleeping Twins bats gets really hot, I think we're done for.

And I'm the eternal Twins optimist.

Maybe the Twins should bring up Ruiz, he's killing everything in Triple-A.

And Mathias, you are scarying me with your fatalistic view of the Twins. Come on, you've always been the beacon of hope.

I need a match for this lighthouse. Randy Ruiz stinks, and we already have a first baseman and a designated hitter. Bring him up in September.

Sorry if my bad attitude about the Twins is ruining this thread. I'm glad to read all of the positive talk about my favorite team. I'll be at the Dome a lot this weekend.

If you have any doubt about the Twins, you should have seen the game last night. Once Gardenhire's rant got them fired up, they were awesome!!

Ozzie (their manager) himself said in his post-game interview that unless Griffey can pitch, he can't help the White Sox win games.

Never say never with the Twins!

I feel it needs pointing out that, since Griffey Jr. joined the White Sox, the Twins have gained the lead in the Central division.

Not to draw attention to my own fateful prediction, but I wanted to offer the hope y'all were looking for earlier. Casilla is coming back. See the story: http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080819&content_id=.... And dry my tears.
