'Idiocracy' ends in idiotic way (big surprise, huh?)

No votes yet

"Idiocracy" had a fittingly idiotic ending, don't you think?

This is a stupid, stupid movie. But it's worth watching once.

Scientists are working to create capsules that will preserve people for years to come, extending their lives, et cetera, et cetera. As a trial, they decide to encapsulate a woman and a man for one year. Well, the scientists didn't want to try their work out on the smartest people in society just yet ... in case something goes wrong. So a militaryman who has a way-too-easy job gets assigned to the duty, and a prostitute volunteers for the project.

The project goes awry, and they end up sticking around for 500 years. By that time, they are the two smartest people on Earth.

This movie makes you think about how stupid we are becoming as a society. Could this really happen? Have we made all possible technological advances? Are we downsliding so much as this movie portrays?

It's a skeptic's movie, for sure.

I love when they eventually find the Time Masheen. It's worth watching just for that scene.

I haven’t seen the movie,...

I haven’t seen the movie, but it is on my list of possible rentals. I would say, though, that our society is getting dumber. Just look at how many people are reading these days (almost none), and the rise of "reality" television.

Here’s a specific example that will show how ignorant I am and how ignorant some of my friends are: There is an episode of "The Simpsons" based on the book "Lord of the Flies." The kids get lost on an island and end up going at each other’s throats. A good episode for sure. But I know people who saw it and didn’t understand that it was an allusion to "Lord of the Flies."

It’s a simplistic example, sure, but it shows how many people who watch TV don’t understand what came before TV.
