Just a few of notes about the Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce Miss Jordan Ambassador Program pageant a couple days ago and the program in general:
- Wow, that's a long title for a pageant.
- What is called the personality portion of the pageant is pretty fun. Whatever each Miss Jordan candidate wore was supposed to symbolize part of her personality.
- Emily Hamer wore sunglasses, because she likes the outdoors, she said, and "I'm fun, just like them."
- Sara Hanson held up a Cabela's catalog, saying she is going to try hunting geese and ducks this year. "Cross your fingers that I get one," she said.
- Chelsea Hartman pretended like she was just coming home from a shopping trip. One of the items was a dance leotard, symbolizing her love for the sport. "Dancing is my favorite thing to do. I do it every night," she said.
- Kelsey Killeen talked about her eclectic interest in music to which she listens. When she's angry, for example, she listens to hard rock. "The angry lyrics make me feel happy, I guess. I don't know why," she said.
- Tatiana Lehnen unpacked a suitcase full of shoes, as an illustration. "I take the past of most resistance," she said.
- Lauren Mauk brought a lifesize cutout of her favorite
movie actor, Orlando Bloom in the full attire of Legolas from the "Lord
of the Rings" series. She also likes to play various instruments, a personality trait enhanced by her "Guitar Hero" guitar."I thought a piano my be a little hard to carry,"she said.
- Her sister, Morgan, talked about her love for playing and watching hockey. She likes to watch the fights, she said. Then, with a boxing-gloved left hook, she gave herself an upper cut to the mouth. "It's a good thing I want to be an orthodonist when I grow up," she teased.
- "I also wore sunglasses, because every time I go shopping, I have to buy a new pair," Kelsey Pekarna said.
- Leila Pollock's boots stood for her love for "the county fair, country music, and -- best of all -- big trucks."
- Marsha Wolf said her stone-studded ring reminded her of her grandfather, who has passed away. He made it a tradition to give the women in the family pearl rings on their 18th birthdays. Wolf isn't a fan of pearls, so she got a polished stone instead.
- Shannon Wick played two songs on the flute during short intermissions. Her performances were poetic.
- As usual, the reigning Miss Jordan and her royal court presented a slideshow, a memoir of the past year. This year's royalty recorded voiceovers to go with the pictures.
- First princess Mikayla Robling's story about a so-called hillbilly who jumped onto the royal float during one parade drew laughter from the crowd, especially when she revealed that it was her mother, Janet, who told the man to hop on. Ha!
- Sarah Will said she "received an amazing gift" last year, when she was named Miss Jordan.
- Miss Congeniality Erin Wildberg spoke eloquently on the recording and in front of the audience, and second princess Marsha Bartholomay, although away at college already, played an important role in the slideshow, talking and being pictured.
- And for dinner, the chicken was good.
- The program's organizers -- "the two Saras," as they are known -- have been hardworking and are much appreciated by the young women who compete, as well as those chosen to serve as royalty throughout the year.
