Hiding behind screen names is fair game online

No votes yet

Various users of this Web site have openly questioned other users about their identities.

This kind of public criticism ought to stop.

It is a commonly accepted practice with e-mail and the Internet to go by whatever name you so choose, even if it is not your legal name. If a user of this Web site would like to go by Fat Albert or Kathy Ghost Hunter, for examples, those names are fine. If you would rather go by your legal name or a name that you go by when you are not online, as I do, I would encourage that, as well.

But each user may choose.

No user of this Web site should feel pressured or be berated for using a screen name.

The use of a screen name is allowed for two reasons:

- One, it's fun.

- Two, some people -- usually private people who prefer to stay out of the public eye -- feel more comfortable discussing important issues in public without their name attached. It is OK to post comments online, even if the comments are controversial, with a byline that employs the use of a screen name.

What is not OK is to post comments that violate the user agreement. If you have a question about what you may or may not post online, feel free to call me, e-mail me, or stop by the office, 109 Rice St. S.

Of course, if you choose the latter, you might have to identify yourself.

Matthias and others, Thanks...

Matthias and others,

Thanks for the thoughts.I know that a name like LemonySnicket means nothing to most. I am not sure it is even a good representation of me. However, the need for anonymity in some cases is needed and in others not so much. I guess a person can have multiple personalities online. I can even ID myself if, I chose to do so. In some cases, I will. In some not so much.

I agree that some of the things are not very nice and some indeed are controversial. However, there is a way for people to vent. An example being St. Johns. Some of the people would not have the opportunity to even say anything in real time. Most of what I have seen is not bad or wrong. People get passionate about ideals and ideas. If someone really wanted to see me, I would not turn down the invitation. For now there are times when one needs to lurk or perhaps like some just watch the action. Not everyone is hiding. I just appreciate an outlet for some thoughts. We live in a town that is changing and with change comes a good deal of stress. Seems to me this allows a lot of people an outlet for words that they would have, otherwise, never said.

I agree totally with LS. If it wasn't for anonymity, there probably wouldn't be as much exchange of ideas here online.

You certainly need to choose your words carefully when you don't use a different name. I hope Ray Sandey never catches on to me using his name and picture...

Yeah, ok I am kidding.
